The passing of Millvina Dean - Sunday, May 31, 2009

The SS Titan Foundation is deeply saddened by the passing today of Millvina Dean, Titanic's last living survivor, ironic as today also marks the 98th anniversary of Titanic's launch from Harland and Wolff.

It was hoped that she would stay with us until at least the completion of Titan, where we had hoped she would christen her.

We join the millions of Titanic enthusiasts around the world in mourning her loss today, she will be sorely missed ...

Titan

The world’s largest, longest and fastest ocean liner ever to be constructed. She will be the literal vehicle which will propel the Foundation’s  vision and mission forward, its importance to the successful fruition of those elements is undeniable.

This newbuild will fulfill its own niche in the cruise line industry, a multi-billion dollar and highly competitive market dominated by Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Comparatively, SS Titan, ltd. will not  differ much from other lines, as all will offer cruises on their respective itineraries, and Cunard, a unit of Carnival, offers trans-Atlantic voyages aboard its Queen Mary 2.

Competitively, the corporate arm of the Foundation will offer two distinct advantages over all other cruise line heavyweights. First, Titan will enter service from day one debt-free. She’ll be paid for. Second, Titan herself.

Today’s cruise ships, while packed with all the glitz and glamour one could expect from casinos, outdoor heated pools, thumping nightclubs, and buffets that stretch forever, cannot and never will hold a flame to the golden age of trans-Atlantic ship travel. Outwardly, the vast majority of these cruise ships are quite unsightly when compared to the sleek lines of a Titanic, Queen Mary, Normandie, United States, among many others. They look like stubby floating bricks with square windows, and offer their customers no character whatsoever. These vessels aren’t really ships, but little more than floating barges designed with hotels set upon their backs.

Titan will be a sleek greyhound, a grandchild to all great liners past, with all of the modern amenities today’s demanding cruiser wants, with a twist. She’ll offer those perks while blending them with the luxury and opulence of the past. And with her design, exteriorally she’ll look just like her inspiration - Titanic. With her many public spaces she’ll evoke memories of Titanic in living colorful detail.

With an onboard museum dedicated to Titanic as well as other great liners, she will offer yet another advantage. Titan will be available to the general public for affordable onboard tours at all of her ports of call. She will also offer affordable all-inclusive “Voyages to Nowhere” from those port calls so the average citizen can experience Titanic for an evening.

All of this aboard the world’s largest liner
