The passing of Millvina Dean - Sunday, May 31, 2009

The SS Titan Foundation is deeply saddened by the passing today of Millvina Dean, Titanic's last living survivor, ironic as today also marks the 98th anniversary of Titanic's launch from Harland and Wolff.

It was hoped that she would stay with us until at least the completion of Titan, where we had hoped she would christen her.

We join the millions of Titanic enthusiasts around the world in mourning her loss today, she will be sorely missed ...

Foundation

The SS Titan Foundation has been formed as a non-profit trust which will be responsible for fundraising, grantmaking, and as an entity which will also own and operate its non-profit corporate arm, SS Titan, ltd, an extension of the Foundation which will be responsible for the day to day operations of Titan when she enters service, including the hiring and training of all shipboard, port, and office staff, and oversight of all other vessel activities which include port tours, overnight voyages, cruises, and trans-Atlantic/Pacific crossings.

The Foundation’s main objective is to transform the massive profit potential of Titan into a positive force for change in our world.

Titanic’s sudden and tragic loss cost over 1500 lives the night of April 14-15, 1912, an event which scarred and forever changed the lives of countless others in but a millisecond. In the years since, individuals and various business ventures alike have focused their intentions to capitalize financially from the Titanic tragedy. The Foundation strongly feels that this line of thinking, especially in regards to a  newbuild of this magnitude is morally irresponsible, and further, the Foundation feels that in no way should profits be extracted from the misfortune of those lost and most affected by the Titanic disaster.

The Foundation is being formed in such a way as to respect and sympathize with those directly affected by the loss of Titanic that night - the relatives of those both lost and saved, and the the thousands of workers who built her. It will honor all involved with the events of Titanic’s first and last voyage by making an attempt to at least try to make something positive come, if at all possible, from the death of Titanic and the souls lost aboard her.

These honors will include the creation of scholarships, and with the blessing of surviving families, to be named after individuals who were aboard Titanic - both known and unknown. These scholarships will be awarded to exceptional yet underprivileged youth and will be available to them wherever they reside on Earth, and will be given annually based upon a fair set of criteria as determined by the Foundation’s board of directors.

Finally, but more importantly, is the true spirit and motivation behind the undertaking that the SS Titan Foundation is mounting - it  will make available grants to other non-profits and research organizations whose focus are directed and dedicated to the world’s sick  and needy children, specifically to those who are suffering from serious debilitating ailments, HIV/AIDS, various childhood cancers, and other horrible afflictions. In addition, the funding of programs who directly benefit those children who are undernourished, homeless, illiterate, and abused will be a very top priority for the SS Titan Foundation.

These children are located throughout the world, and desperately need help. They are the future, and it is in the Foundation’s best interest, as well as all mankind’s, to render as much assistance as possible to these wonderful young people.

Helping them would be an important continuing legacy of the Titanic.
